Project 2-Upcycled Utility

 Rationale:

The aim of this project is to come up with an elegant mood lamp made out of advertising posters producing less waste as possible. When I research what makes a good lamp, it came up with good lamp shades and the light it produces. Lamp can gives the extra touch in decorations and it’s really important especially in interior design.

My solution is to come up with an elegant design of upcycled advertising poster that emphasizes on the characteristics of the materials itself. The materials are manipulated by a little folding and arrangements so that it produces an elegant, intelligent design that will not only be good for the decorations but also produces good lighting for indoor purposes.

I firstly did some prototypes for my lampshades on normal paper, however, I encountered some problem as the real material of the poster does not react like paper, it’s more stiff and therefore it does not look as flowing as I would like to be.

After trying different concepts, I established my final design using similar concept as I did on paper. With a little folding technique and some arrangements based on one point of the circle, I finally created a lampshade that is made of 18 rectangular shapes strips and joined them using brass fasteners. This design was inspired again by my design philosophy of creating a product that is simple and yet aesthetically beautiful.

Another advantage of my lamp is that it produces 0% waste, so the whole poster can be used and therefore it’s sustainably very good. Pinning techniques was used to add extra details and decorations of the lamp shade. This patterns will gives feminine, elegant touch while at the same time allowing the radiance of the light to flow towards outside the lampshade.

My only improvement would be to try making a better pattern that will therefore produces more interesting shadows.

  1. I really like your design, it references traditional lamp shades yet has a modern look with the blade like sections, the colour looks amazing, i agree with you that maybe the pattern could be improved maybe through use of more holes or a specific pattern, but well done, really nice design.

  2. Nice design! I like the reference to archetypal lamps with an interesting twist. As an improvement I would suggest trying to incorporate a few curves into each blade which might alter the shading effect given off as well!

  3. i like it! i saw your model in paper, it looks even better :D i think that's the challenge in this project, sometimes model in paper looks better cos the characteristic of paper thats like flowing..but your model in this material is nice as well, i agree you can improve the pattern so that your lamps become more decorative :D good job feli!

  4. i love how the perforated detail is subtle and adds to the complexity of the light . the twist in the strips is also really nice :) an improvement could be to accentuate the lampshade shape to be less square . but its really hard to criticize something beautiful .

  5. your lamp was one of my favourites. its simple but very elegant. i liked that it was very well executed and the light that came from it was really ambient. one improvement that can be made perhaps to make the holes into a nice pattern, they look a little random. but i really like it as it is also.

  6. I really love that light! there is something calming about it and it looks really professional, maybe use of different colours would make it even better, but other than that, its perfect, keep up the good work :)

  7. I like some points such as having a soft appearance which definitely leads to good mood as you planned probably. also, the usage of whole poster for this lamp is 100%, which is really good so that you satisfy the environmental issue as well. if i say some improvements, maybe you will need integration of holes on the surface such as having specific pattern rather than just placed two on each piece. but overall i was so impressed.
